So much for a night of work..!! Just as well I never came out..
This happened (smell, smnoke, lots more smoke form engine bay), then.....
Must be here somewhere

Yes, the driveshaft has come out of the gearbox housing, and the clip has come off
Close up. Obviously not good. ALso damaged gearbox by the loks of it
and lots of sheared metal swarf lying around
Looks like new gearbox, if housing is damaged, raqther than just a new driveshaft. Looks like main diff bearing has gone kaput!!!
BUT being an MG owner, I have already had offer of a free gearbox!! A guy in England is driving it to Glasgwo at tyhe weekend, and another MGF owner from Glasgow is drigin it up to me on monday...all for free (but I wil pay them anyway). What a community we belong to!!!!!
So I may ask for some help in future on hot to fit a gearbox on an MGF on the street!!!!
